For many, a stroke strikes without warning, irrevocably altering life in an instant. For Mr Imran Bin Wahid, the terrifying reality unfolded in his sleep. “I suffered my stroke in my sleep. When I woke up, I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak. I could only get help around five hours later, when I realised [that] my right side was disabled.”
Before the stroke, he was an active delivery rider, a profession that relied heavily on his mobility and love for cycling. The sudden loss of these abilities brought immense frustration as he felt that he was no longer independent, sharing: “I had to rely on people to help me to do things, even the simplest things like getting food or going to the toilet, even.”
A New Chapter at S3
His path to recovery began when he was referred to S3 from St. Luke’s Hospital, starting his therapy sessions in June 2023. Rehabilitation at S3 has been instrumental in his progress. With resilience and hard work, he has significantly improved the use of his right side, tackling everyday tasks with newfound confidence. He noted, “I have relearned to use my right side more, [such as] dressing myself, drinking with my right side, which I was not really confident before to use my right arm.”
Beyond the physical improvements, Mr Imran highlights the supportive environment at S3. “The therapists here are very nice – they’re very friendly, we feel very comfortable, not pressured or anything. It’s a good vibe.” This comfortable atmosphere has fostered a sense of self-assurance in his recovery journey.
The Path Forward
With each session, Mr Imran feels a growing sense of empowerment. “After the rehab at S3, I feel more confident of myself, to do things on my own with my right side, and I aim to improve more, to relearn to do things on my own.”
His ultimate goal is clear and deeply personal: “I want to get better so that I can return to work to support my family and myself.”
To other fellow stroke survivors, he said: “I hope that other stroke survivors get rehab from S3, that they don’t give up, and that they continue to work on themselves.”
Mr Imran’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the vital support offered by organisations like S3.
