On 17 January 2025, S3 partnered SBS Transit to pilot the use of the CARES Community Bus for ambulatory training for stroke survivors at the Enabling Village. Launched in 2023 by Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance, the CARES Community Bus is a first-of-its-kind single deck public bus, refurbished to retain most of its original layout. The bus provides a safe and controlled environment for individuals with special needs and physical disabilities to practise travelling independently.

For persons affected by stroke, regaining the confidence to use public transport is a crucial step towards community reintegration. Challenges related to mobility, stamina, and balance can make everyday commutes seem daunting. This pilot programme addressed these concerns by simulating real-life commuting scenarios, including boarding and alighting at a bus stop. Participants gained valuable experience and boosted their confidence in a supportive environment.

S3's skilled therapists worked closely with the stroke survivors, providing hands-on training in safety procedures and manoeuvring techniques on the bus. As stroke affects everyone differently, this personalised approach ensured that each participant received the support they needed based on their unique needs to maximise their learning and build their independence.

S3 extends its sincere gratitude to SBS Transit for their invaluable support in making this initiative possible. We also thank SG Enable for their coordination efforts. We are excited to see the positive impact of this collaboration and look forward to its continued development!
